Our children’s karate dojo welcomed the new year with 2016 punches. 1900 punches on land and the last 116 in the ice cold water of Puget Sound. The Shihan (master instructor) offered some resolutions that resonate across all cultures: forgiveness, acceptance and calm, and the pleasure of saying yes to help others.
As I stood there beside my Indian Hindu friend listening to the Japanese descent Shihan give strength in body and spirit to the group – diverse in age and culture and stages of life, pride washed over me to see tolerance and learning in action.
Below, the brave few including my children in the bunch punching in the last 116 punches to welcome the new tide and year, facing the sun.
